What you have to look for in a good blog host

If you’re a WordPress user like me, then you know the importance of having a top-notch web host supporting you. Having used with three well-known webhosts over the years, I’ve discovered several things you need to have in order to create a solid and reliable base from which to run your online business.

I’ve heard endless nightmare stories from friends and colleagues who have decided to use systems that were recommended to them, often because they gave away something free with hosting, or because they were the cheapest option around.

Rest assured: you get what you pay for. Here are some of the things you should look for when researching a reliable web host.

Reasonable cost. There are a lot of options out there when it comes to webhosting. And since money doesn’t grow on trees, most business owners, like me, like to make sure we receive value for the dollars we spend. Make sure your host of choice offers great value and at a reasonable price.

Uptime. I’ve heard countless stories of several big-named hosts going down for hours. That’s just unacceptable in today’s world. If you’re an online business, maintaining your presence online is key to your success. Make sure their uptime – the time that they keep their systems functioning — is at least at 99%.

Reliable phone support. Make sure that your webhost has fast, efficient, reliable and free phone support 24/7. I only work with companies that include this. If their systems are good, they always offer free and fast phone support.

Great systems and processes result in a lot less helpdesk calls. If you have to wait more than 5 or 10 minutes, you should probably consider another company. I used a well-known company for years and often waited 45 minutes or more only to be disconnected when it was my turn to speak with a representative. Then, I decided to move all of my sites and domains to another host and have never looked back.

CPanel access. If you use WordPress, it’s really important that you have cpanel access — and SimpleScripts install for your blogs. This will save you lots of headaches, not to mention time and energy.
